About Measure A

The City of Ventura’s ability to provide vital public services – especially libraries, street paving, and public safety – is at risk.

To keep our city safe and well-maintained, it is essential that we have a protected, LOCAL source of income that is not subject to the State’s fiscal irresponsibility.

In these difficult economic times, the City has taken significant steps to maintain a balanced budget. This year alone, the City cut its budget over $11 million. Every city employee took at least a 5% decrease in compensation. 40 city staff positions were cut. Many city services have been eliminated or restructured to balance the budget.

Thanks to the State’s own fiscal problems, this is no longer enough. Already, the state takes 85% of the property and sales tax dollars we pay. Now the State is taking millions of dollars more of the city’s money.

Measure A Facts:

  • Measure A will increase the sales tax by ½ cent for four years.
  • Measure A will provide over $8 million a year to pay for these vital services right here in our community.
  • Because this is a local tax, 100% of the money will stay in Ventura—the State cannot touch it.
  • The average cost for each resident will be less than $75 per year because out-of-town visitors will pay their fair share of the property tax.
  • Measure A won’t put Ventura at a competitive disadvantage, because Oxnard and Santa Barbara have higher taxes already.
